Summer Fun
 |
| Sarah and Mazal!!!! |
It's good to be back on the blogger! We've been having a great summer here on the farm. Lots of visitors, we have met so many people and it has been great sharing the joys of living here on the farm and raising alpacas. We started something new this summer.....farm tours. 2-Hour tour of the farm and education about alpacas topped off with hands on lesson on how to spin using a drop spindle. So give us a call and schedule a visit. We like to plan tours for in the morning before noon. The summer heat is setting records and the alpacas like to take an afternoon nap....hmmm that's sounds like a great idea!!! Labels: Alpacas, Tours

Empire Extravaganza 2010
We did not think we could top last weekend's showing at VAOBA Expo 2010, but much to our pleasure, our showing at the Empire Extravaganza 2010 was even better! A Level IV with almost twice as many entries, we took 2 banners, Campeon won Color Champion in the Light Division, and Icon won Color Champion in the Black Division. So two standing for Judges' Choice and Icon took home top honors. Great showings from everyone else including a Blue Ribbon in very tough Medium Fawn division for Moreno Deos, Vecurio came in second to the Reserve Champion in the Beige 2 year olds, and Gianni was 3rd in Beige, Cherokee was 2nd in Light Fawn, Simkara was 1st in White, Topaz 3rd and Zoete 5th in Fawn. Simkara and Moreno helped A.L. Paca's place 2nd in the Get-of-Sire!!!Labels: Show Winners Again Empire Extravaganza Alpaca Show Championship winners Alpaca Show in NY

VAOBA 2010
One of our best showings ever this past weekend in VAOBA! 4 Color Championships and 1 Reserve Champion plus 1st in Get-of-Sire (with our Silvercloud Farm's Mercurio) and a 1st in Breeders Best Three (2 of the 3 were Mercurio offspring and the third was Campeon). Gianni took a 2nd in Bred & Owned. Color Champions were in black, fawn and light male and the white female. Reserve Champion was in the light. LA Northern Lights has 2 championships in a row now and we are thrilled that he has performed well in the ring since we sold half interest in him to John and Denise Price of Pyramid Alpacas. And equally as thrilled are we for our other partners with SA Normandy's Icon--Don and Eva Pullen. Icon has 2 championships as well. In the showstring of 10, everyone placed 2nd or above with the exception of Gianni, who was beat by his own brother, younger one at that! Labels: alpaca show, VAOBA 2010

National Alpaca Farm Day
We were very fortunate to have beautiful weather for National Alpaca Farm Day on September 25 & 26 here at the farm. There were an estimated 200 visitors this year, and most had never seen let alone touched an alpaca before. Our Voxie was in true ambassador form, greeting visitors and kushing for kids, just begging for someone to give her a handout. Voxie is a yearling female who was bottle supplemented and sometimes forgets she is an alpaca. New this year was the obstacle course. Children were able to help us walk the alpacas over jumps around pumpkins and hay bales and into the trailer. Chace and Bogie did an excellent job of entertaining the crowd. The Alpaca Clothing Fashion Show was once again a big hit thanks to our two models Kelsee Grove and Rebecca Starliper. They were simply beautiful....and warm! But the absolute highlight of the weekend for visitors were the cria births--a male on Saturday and a female on Sunday. Hope to see you next year.Labels: Alpaca Clothing Fashion Show, NAFD
Alpacas 101 Class
Our next Alpacas 101 workshop is scheduled for October 9, 1020 from 9 AM to 12 Noon. Topics covered vary from each session according to individual interests but often include barn and pasture layout, fencing, pasture management, herd health topics such as giving shots and oral medications, toenail trims, dental, fleece assessment, conformation evaluation, breeding, shearing, halter training, preparing for deliveries, care of the cria and more! Free admission. Email or call to register. Always a lot of fun!Labels: Alpaca workshops, Alpacas 101
Paladin Crias
The long awaited arrival of our first Paladin crias came in September. A MF female out of Velyssa. The first was followed by a LF male from Muffit, a DF male from Gina, and White females from Belleza and Hope. First impressions are that he is stamping out a highly reproducible phenotype. All five crias with medium bone, straight legs, exact proportions and perfect conformation. Add to that what looks like some of the finest (in terms of AFD) fleeces we've had to date. And coming from Paladin, we would expect great fleece density, curvatures, and brightness. Yes, we are very pleased. One more Paladin offspring this birthing season. Stay tuned!Labels: Paladin offspring, Vic Jr's Hemiaccoyo Paladin

SEPA Results
We participated in the 2010 SEPA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Alpaca Show and Sale) in Reading, PA several weekends past and had a fantastic show for our alpacas. Our show string totaled 11 and every alpaca took a ribbon. We won 9 BLUE RIBBONS, 1 RED Ribbon, and 2 WHITE RIBBONS. The highlights were a Champion and three Reserve Champions. It was a first show for Campeon, a juvenile LF out of our Champion Bali and we were thrilled when he took 1st and then Champion. Our Reserve Champions were Vecurio, Moreno and our favorite LA Northern Lights! The other highlight was a 1st place in Get-O-Sire, for our Silvercloud Farm's Mercurio beating Principio. Get-of-Sire is a production class where you present three offspring from your Herdsire and they are judged to see how consistently he reproduces, ie--prepotent. Labels: Champion Alpacas, SEPA
